Exploring personalised care education needs to empower staff in implementing health equity.
Innovex Partners reviewed and investigated staff training requirements that facilitate the implementation of personalised care as vehicle for improving health equity across the Birmingham and Solihull Integrated Care System.
Via interviews, a survey, and focus groups we heard from 46 staff about their requirements. Building upon the collective understanding Innovex identified the characteristics of effective training approaches and infrastructure required for longer-term sustainability.
Here are some of the pragmatic recommendations on how to meet staff educational needs:
- Co-develop a tactical model or theory of change about how personalised care can be used as an enabler to tackle health inequalities and appoint integrated care system leaders to have strategic ownership of this. Leaders should drive the co-development process ensuring there is involvement, support and agreement from patients, Voluntary, Community, Social, and Faith Enterprise (VCSFE) organisations and stakeholders across organisations.
- Co-create place-based models of working between integrated care system staff, patients and VCSFE organisations building on existing models, such as the Community Champion models, that enable working in equal partnership.
- Work with Trust based improvement teams to identify existing initiatives and approaches that tackle health inequalities.
- Use relevant tools that identify population segments experiencing the worst health outcomes and initiatives that tackle health inequalities.
- Educate staff on how to access relevant health inequalities data, interpret and use it to create personalised care interventions to tackle health inequalities.
